Teacher of IB PYP & MYP English Language Support (EAL/ESL)
Scope: Primary and Secondary
Reporting to: Head of Primary, PYP Coordinator, Head of English Support Services, Head of Secondary, MYP Coordinator
In order to fill this role effectively the person taking on the role will need to have a range of qualities, competencies and experience. The Teacher of EAL/ESL should be an inspirational, passionate and adaptable educator and a creative and innovative curriculum leader. He/She should be an outstanding motivator, learner, administrator and communicator, with excellent interpersonal skills, and should be capable of leading an area of learning and preparing students for international programmes in a stimulating, challenging and well-organised learning environment.
Qualifications and experience. The school prefers people with:
Qualified teacher status appropriate to the teaching duties to be undertaken.
Experience in teaching English as Second or Additional Language.
Knowledge and Skills. He/She should:
model the behaviours and values promoted by ISL Qatar and act as a role model for colleagues and students
possess excellent communication skills and be willing to adapt to the demands of an international school, in particular he/she should be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.
have the ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload
have a high level of understanding of current research as to how children learn and possess the ability to motivate students to perform at their best
through differentiated instruction, and by using a variety of styles, be able to inspire mixed culture students with specific English Language needs, by creating challenging and engaging learning opportunities
be able to participate fully in an expanding IB school and in particular help to develop the team spirit
have a high level of awareness of current developments and research in the field of English Language Support.
To implement the EAL/ESL curricula and schemes of work for students throughout the school.
To liaise with the Head of Primary/Secondary and the PYP/MYP teams and the curriculum leaders to ensure effective delivery of the curriculum to specified classes, including selecting resources and managing them efficiently in the classroom
To participate in the design, development, implementation and review of the EAL/ESL curriculum
To participate in the design, development, implementation and review of assessment and reporting systems
To promote the health and safety of assigned classes
To participate in professional development and contribute to regular staff training/meetings
To encourage the team spirit in the primary school and develop links with colleagues across the school
To contribute to community service and global citizenship goals
To contribute to the extra-curricular activities programme of the school
To contribute to the development of a positive attitude between the primary/secondary school and the wider community through cooperative relations, publications, competitions etc.
To enhance the professional standing of the teaching body
Specific Responsibilities. The successful candidate will assume this post at a crucial stage in the development of ISL Qatar. The following list gives an indication of some of the specific current matters to be addressed.
To participate in the current development of the PYP & MYP, addressing matters arising from our PYP & MYP authorisation report
To use technology to support EAL/ESL learning, especially through use of a Virtual Learning Environment (ManageBac)
To participate in the on-going accreditation process with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
To participate in development of Assessment for Learning (AFL) and Understanding by Design (UBD)
To participate in the development of the new pastoral programmes
