IB Secondary Years Programme Teacher Librarian: Job Description/Teacher Profile

 

Scope: IB Secondary Years Programme

Reporting to: Head of Secondary, Head of School

In order to fill this role effectively, the successful candidate will need to have a diverse range of qualities, competencies and experience. The teacher librarian will be responsible for the efficient operation of the libraries/media centres in ISL Qatar. He/she will maintain and develop the libraries/media centres within the context of the IB Secondary Years Programme.

 

1          Qualifications and experience. The school prefers people with:

1.1       a good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification ideally in Teacher Librarianship or media specialist

1.2       experience and/or qualifications in a Secondary School library environment

 

2          Knowledge and Skills. He/She should:

2.1       be aligned with the ISL values of diversity, passion, identity and understanding

2.2       possess excellent communication skills and be willing to adapt to the demands of an international school; in particular he/she should be able to communicate effectively in English

2.3       show genuine interest in all students and ensure that the IB Learner Profile and PYP attitudes are prominent aspects of their school life

2.4       be able to participate fully in an expanding IB school and, in particular, help to develop the team spirit within the Secondary school

2.5       provide guidance and leadership to all employees who work directly or indirectly in the library

2.6       have the ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload

 

3          Responsibilities.

3.1       Maintain a positive, vibrant and stimulating library environment

3.2       Develop a library curriculum which will provide for the needs of all PYP students

3.3       Work with the Programme Coordinators in support of articulation and development of the curriculum

3.4       Research and suggest ways that the libraries/media centres can support teaching and learning at ISL Qatar with an emphasis with an emphasis on integrating technology into teaching and learning, and on information and digital literacy skills.

3.5       Collaboratively plan and teach with teachers as appropriate

3.6       Work with the various learning communities in the school to ensure that library resources are sufficient

3.7       Support the curriculum through assisting staff and students to locate , use and evaluate suitable material

3.8       Facilitate the maintenance of all electronic resources and equipment in the library/media centre

3.9       Assist and advise staff in the use of the libraries/media centres and their resources both print and digital to successfully meet the needs of the ISL Qatar curriculum.

3.10    Keep up to date with current developments and communicate these as needed

3.11    Maintain accurate inventory records

3.12    Facilitate collection development (books, magazines, journals all print materials to support curriculum and promotion of leisure reading)

 

4          Specific Targets. The successful candidate will assume this post at a crucial stage in the development of ISL Qatar. The following list gives an indication of some of the specific current matters to be addressed.

4.1       To assist students and staff to acquire independence and be resourceful in the use of library technologies through class/individual tuition

4.2       To foster inquiry and research skills in students

4.3       To develop appropriate academic honesty skills in students

4.4       To foster a love of reading and books in students

4.5       To report to the school leadership on innovative ideas occurring in school library programmes

Requirements
1.1 a good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification ideally in Teacher Librarianship or media specialist
