Teaching Abroad Direct is delighted to be supporting a leading British international school in Guangzhou, China, in the recruitment of an Assistant Head of Secondary with responsibility for Pastoral Care. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced and passionate educator who is committed to student wellbeing, safeguarding, and building a strong pastoral culture within a thriving international school community.

The Role

The successful candidate will join the senior leadership team and play a key role in shaping and leading the pastoral vision of the secondary school. You will oversee student wellbeing, behaviour, safeguarding, and the development of a supportive and inclusive school environment that enables every student to flourish.

Working closely with the Head of Secondary and wider leadership team, you will drive high standards of pastoral care while supporting the academic and personal development of students across the secondary phase.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the pastoral systems and structures within the secondary school
• Oversee student wellbeing, behaviour, and safeguarding practices
• Manage and support Heads of Year and pastoral teams
• Promote a positive school culture that prioritises wellbeing, respect, and belonging
• Work closely with parents, staff, and students to maintain strong relationships across the school community
• Contribute to the strategic leadership and continuous improvement of the school
   

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a confident and inspirational school leader who brings both strong pastoral expertise and the ability to build positive relationships across the school.

Applicants should have:

• Proven leadership experience within a secondary school setting
• Strong knowledge of pastoral systems, safeguarding, and student wellbeing
• Experience supporting or managing pastoral teams such as Heads of Year
• A commitment to high standards, inclusion, and student development
• Experience in an international or British curriculum school (desirable but not essential)
